How to choose the best yoga mat for you – Help Advisors

So you want to get into yoga? Great! It’s a fantastic way to exercise and improve your flexibility — but what mat should you buy? Don’t fall into the mistake of buying without checking out our tips first — you’ll definitely make a winning choice!

1. Choose according to the type of yoga and the grip required:

Hatha, Yin, Ashtanga and Kundalini yoga are more relaxed and less intense forms of yoga, so a mat that has a good grip and is comfortable for sitting positions is the best choice.

Types of yoga like Vinyasa, Iyengar or restorative involve more complex movements and therefore require a mat with a strong grip to prevent you falling or slipping.

Hot yoga or Bikram yoga requires continuous movement in a room where there is high humidity. Choose a mat that is waterproof so that sweat and moisture will not make you lose grip – and your mat will last longer.

2. Choose the right size:

Normally yoga mats are 173 cm long and 60 cm wide, but certain mats are available in other sizes, reaching up to 190 cm long and 100 cm wide.

If you are very tall choose the most suitable length for you. You do not want to be hanging off the edge of the mat in the middle of that delicate yoga pose!

3. Consider the weight:

If you are going to practice yoga at home, the weight of the mat is no problem. But if you need to take it with you to a class, take that into account. Lugging around more than 2kg every day can get a bit uncomfortable- and might discourage you from going to your classes.

4. Choose the appropriate padding:

If you are still a beginner (or your joints are sensitive) it is advisable to choose a thicker mat. The only disadvantage of mats with more cushioning is that they affect your balance. Keep that in mind when buying your mat. If you are advanced in the world of yoga then go for one with less padding.

5. Finally, choose the design and color you like best:

Although it seem unimportant, having a mat that you like and that and transmits good energy is a very important factor. In addition, if you have chosen one with a unique design,  your friends and yoga classmates will love it, and it will get you talking!

With the amount of mats on the market, choosing one that suits you is a complicated task. We’ve made this list to help you select the best mat for your needs. Check out a large selection here.
